Phil Smoot, a self-described “recreational data scientist,” was Executive Vice President of Science Technology at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). Throughout his five years there he oversaw the research and development of software tools across CZI’s focus areas of infectious diseases, single-cell biology, and imaging. He currently serves as a technical advisor at CZI.
Smoot has over 30 years of experience in software development and data science, which includes building large-scale consumer and enterprise internet services. Prior to joining CZI, he was a VP and Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft working on a variety of products that included Hotmail, Outlook, Messenger, OneDrive, Sharepoint, and various other cloud storage, security, and management systems.
Smoot is a member of the Board of Managers for the Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging. He is an alumnus of UC Santa Barbara holding a BS in Physics, and worked his way through the master’s computer science program at San Francisco State University.
